It Is Going to Take All of Us to End This Inhumanity.

Woman passionately speaking into a megaphone during a protest.

When Systems Forget Our Humanity, People Suffer

Our government systems were created to serve and protect people. But too often, the very systems families depend on for survival have become increasingly difficult to navigate, unforgiving, and inhumane.

A system becomes inhumane when it sees a case number instead of a human being. When it demands paperwork from someone in crisis but offers no one to help them complete it. When it denies assistance because of a missed deadline without considering the disability, trauma, or hardship that caused the delay.

It happens when a mother facing eviction cannot get housing assistance until she becomes homeless. When someone struggling with addiction is punished instead of offered treatment. When a person experiencing a mental health crisis waits months for care. When a worker becomes ill and must fight for benefits while losing the income needed to survive.

It happens when seniors cannot afford their medication, families are passed from agency to agency without answers, and people with disabilities must repeatedly prove they deserve reasonable accommodations.

How can we call these systems successful when people are falling through the cracks, losing their homes, their health, their dignity, and sometimes their lives?

The problem is not simply a lack of programs. It is also how those programs operate. Complicated applications, disconnected agencies, inaccessible services, delayed decisions, rigid eligibility rules, and a lack of accountability can turn a request for help into another crisis.

Too often, we measure success by how many applications are processed, how much money is spent, or how many procedures are followed, instead of whether a family remained housed, a person received treatment, or a life was protected.

Following a policy should never become more important than protecting a human life.

Natasha Bennett has experienced these barriers personally and witnessed them professionally through her work in behavioral health, addiction services, housing, and community development.

She believes we must examine the laws and policies that create unnecessary barriers, strengthen accountability, improve coordination between agencies, expand access to services, and ensure that people are treated with dignity.

We cannot keep asking struggling families to navigate broken systems while refusing to change the systems themselves.

A person should not have to become homeless to qualify for help. A person should not have to reach a breaking point to receive mental health care. And a family should not have to bury someone they love before their cries for help are taken seriously.

This is why Natasha believes public policy must be people-centered.

See the person. Hear the person. Serve the person. Protect human life.

Because behind every application, every denial, every waiting list, and every government decision is someone's mother, father, child, neighbor, or loved one.

And every one of those lives matters.

Priorities. One Purpose: PEOPLE

Education: Affordable College and Stronger Schools

Affordable Living: Ending the Paycheck-to-Paycheck Struggle

Education: Affordable College and Stronger Schools

Quality education for all, with stronger schools, affordable college, career training, and support.

Every student deserves access to a quality education regardless of their family's income or ZIP code. I support strengthening public schools, expanding affordable college and trade-school opportunities, addressing student loan burdens, and helping graduates transition into meaningful careers. Education should create opportunities, not leave students struggling financially before they begin their adult lives. I also believe schools must have the resources to support students academically, socially, and emotionally.

Mental Health and Addiction Recovery

Affordable Living: Ending the Paycheck-to-Paycheck Struggle

Education: Affordable College and Stronger Schools

Mental health conditions and substance use disorders are healthcare issues that deserve compassionate, evidence-based treatment and ongoing support. As an addiction counseling professional, I understand the importance of prevention, early intervention, treatment accessibility, and long-term recovery resources. I support expanding community-based mental health services, addiction treatment programs, sober housing, and recovery residences. People seeking help should not have to reach a crisis before receiving services, and individuals working toward recovery deserve opportunities to rebuild their lives with dignity.

Affordable Living: Ending the Paycheck-to-Paycheck Struggle

Affordable Living: Ending the Paycheck-to-Paycheck Struggle

Working full-time should mean being able to afford food, housing, transportation, utilities, and other necessities without constantly worrying about the next paycheck. I support policies that address rising living costs, strengthen wages, create economic opportunities, and provide meaningful relief for working families. Parents should not have to choose between buying groceries and paying rent. Families deserve more than surviving from one payday to the next; they deserve the opportunity to save, invest, and build financial security.

Homelessness and Support for People in Encampments

Homelessness cannot be solved by simply moving people from one location to another without addressing the circumstances that placed them there. I support direct outreach, accessible shelter, affordable housing pathways, mental health treatment, addiction recovery services, and coordinated assistance for people living in encampments. We must address the underlying causes of homelessness, including financial hardship, disability, unemployment, and lack of supportive services. Every person deserves to be treated with dignity and offered a meaningful opportunity to move toward stability.

Healthcare: Affordable Care for Everyone

Healthcare: Affordable Care for Everyone

Healthcare should be accessible, affordable, and responsive to the needs of the people it serves. No one should have to delay treatment, skip medication, or ignore serious symptoms because they cannot afford medical care. I support improving access to doctors, prescriptions, preventive services, chronic disease treatment, and healthcare for seniors and people with disabilities. Our healthcare system must focus on protecting human life rather than allowing financial barriers to determine who receives necessary treatment.

Housing and Homeownership

Healthcare: Affordable Care for Everyone

Safe and affordable housing is a foundation for healthy families and stronger communities. I support expanding affordable rental housing, increasing homeownership opportunities, preventing avoidable foreclosures, and creating housing solutions for working families, seniors, veterans, and people experiencing homelessness. I also support additional supportive housing and recovery residences for individuals who need stability while rebuilding their lives. Housing policies should help residents remain in their communities rather than allowing rising costs and displacement to push families out.

Childcare: Supporting Working Parents

Seniors, Social Security, and Dignified Retirement

Seniors, Social Security, and Dignified Retirement

Affordable childcare is essential to helping parents remain employed, continue their education, and build financial stability. Too many families spend a significant portion of their income on daycare, leaving little money for housing, food, and other necessities. I support expanding access to affordable, high-quality childcare, strengthening support for childcare providers, and helping working parents access dependable services. Parents should not have to choose between pursuing their careers and ensuring their children receive safe, nurturing care.

Seniors, Social Security, and Dignified Retirement

Seniors, Social Security, and Dignified Retirement

Seniors, Social Security, and Dignified Retirement

Our seniors have spent their lives working, raising families, contributing to their communities, and helping build the society we enjoy today. They deserve to retire with dignity rather than struggle to afford medication, housing, utilities, and groceries. I support protecting retirement security, advocating for stronger Social Security benefits at the federal level, and expanding state and community resources that help seniors remain safe and independent. Aging should not mean being forgotten, financially vulnerable, or forced to choose between essential needs.

Teachers and Educators

Seniors, Social Security, and Dignified Retirement

Stronger Communities and Government Accountability

Teachers play one of the most important roles in shaping our future, yet many educators face financial pressure, limited classroom resources, and increasing responsibilities. I support competitive teacher compensation, adequate school funding, manageable classroom conditions, and stronger resources for students who need additional academic or emotional support. Investing in teachers is investing in children, families, and the long-term strength of Minnesota. Educators deserve the tools, respect, and compensation necessary to succeed.

Stronger Communities and Government Accountability

Stronger Communities and Government Accountability

Strong communities are built when residents are heard, public resources are used responsibly, and government decisions reflect the needs of the people. I support transparency in public spending, meaningful community participation, measurable policy outcomes, and accountability for elected officials. Residents should have opportunities to help shape decisions affecting housing, education, healthcare, public safety, and economic development. Government should not operate as though the public exists to serve political institutions. Public institutions exist to serve the people.

Disability Rights and Inclusive Workplaces

Stronger Communities and Government Accountability

Churches and Faith-Based Community Organizations

People with disabilities deserve equal opportunities to work, receive services, pursue education, and participate fully in their communities. I support stronger accountability for disability discrimination, meaningful workplace accommodations, accessible government services, and fair employment practices. Disability should never be used as a reason to exclude qualified individuals or deny them the opportunity to contribute their skills and experience. Our systems should remove unnecessary barriers, respect individual needs, and ensure that accommodations are meaningful rather than merely promised.

Churches and Faith-Based Community Organizations

Stronger Communities and Government Accountability

Churches and Faith-Based Community Organizations

Churches and faith-based organizations often provide critical support through food distribution, emergency assistance, mentorship, shelter, recovery services, and community outreach. I support strengthening partnerships with organizations that serve residents in need while ensuring public resources are distributed fairly and constitutional protections are respected. Community organizations should have opportunities to collaborate with government when providing essential services. Our goal should be to connect people with resources, strengthen neighborhoods, and ensure assistance reaches those who need it most.
